MUSCULO-SKELETAL IMAGING DIAGNOSIS CPD COURSE

THE NEXT COURSE DATES

6th and 7th May 2017

This is a two-day CPD course for acupuncture, massage, osteopathy, cranio-sacral and other physical and sports therapist and physicians, who want to gain general understanding of Ultrasound (US) and MRI imaging in the diagnosis of musculo-skeletal (MSK) conditions. Each of the two days can be taken as a separate CPD module one day US and one day MRI. Attendance CPD Certificate of 7 contact hours is awarded at the completion of each day.

The course is held at our West London College clinic, Hogarth Youth Centre, Duke Road, London W4 2JR. Classes run on a weekend 10am to 5pm.

COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To enable practitioners to gain fundamental understanding of the physics of Ultrasound and MRI imaging techniques and their application in the visualisation of MSK structure.

To help practitioners appreciate the strengths and limitations of MSK US and MRI imaging in clinical practice and research.

To illustrate the US and MRI appearance of a range normal and pathological MSK structures.

To facilitate development of fundamental interpretation of MSK US and MRI images of a range of common clinical conditions.

To facilitate the inter-professional communication and referral between therapists and MSK physicians.

COURSE CONTENT

The course will first explore the physics behind the US and MRI image formation, the technology and the different imaging technics of US and MRI. Sonographic and MRI appearance of common pathology of various tissues will be illustrated and discussed. Theoretical and practical aspects of the different US and MRI imaging techniques, including aspects of perception, spatial awareness, orientation of images will be explored and explained. The different modes of US (B-mode imaging, Doppler imaging and elastography) and MRI (T1 and T2 weighted images) will be covered and their clinical applications explained and illustrated with images of normal and pathological MSK structures. Finally, the reliability, validity and relevance of MSK imaging will be explored in respect to clinical practice and research.

I.          Day one – MRI MSK imaging

Physics, technology and techniques of MRI imaging

MRI imaging of MSK structures

MRI appearance of common pathologies of the spine and back; hip and shoulder; knee and elbow; ankle and wrist

II.         Day two – Ultrasound MSK imaging

Physics, technology and techniques of ultrasound imaging

Strengths and limitations of MSK ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging of MSK structures

Sonographic appearance of common pathologies of muscles, tendons and joints shoulder; knee; elbow; hand, foot; calf/Achilles

Practical experience of performing US  

COURSE COST

The overall course fee is £260, when the two days are booked at the same time. Each of the two days can also be attended as a separate CPD course. In that case, the fee for each day is £160.

It includes:   

            1. Two 7-hour sessions

            2. Copies of the theoretical lectures

            3. CPD attendance certificates

THE LECTURER

Dr Waseem Bashir Consultant MSK Radiologist

Dr. Bashir is a Consultant Musculoskeletal (MSK) Radiologist. He is a fully qualified medical physician with MRCP (UK) and has completed his radiology training in Aberdeen, UK gaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) in 2005. He then went to Canada to do a dedicated MSK Radiology Fellowship and returned to the UK to complete a second interventional radiology MSK Fellowship (The Lodestone Fellowship) at the world renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in London, UK.

He is currently a Consultant MSK & Trauma Radiologist at the new Queen Elizabeth Medical Centre in Birmingham, UK – part of the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust; one of Europe’s leading clinical and research institutes.

Dr. Bashir has proven research interests in back pain, skeletal biomechanics, sports injuries, muscle, tendon and joint disorders – involving both diagnosis and treatment.

He has published in major peer review journals and received global media status from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in 2006 & 2010 for original articles on the world’s first study to image spinal mechanics in the upright and sitting postures (using a weight-bearing upright MRI) and Autologous Blood Injections in proximal hamstring tendon disease respectively.
